Clothing reflects who we are. The kimono is a demanding garment that requires a new personality. Through the art of dress, and by using her body as her canvas, Marya dons the ritualistically encoded kimono and enters EVERYDAY LIFE ON THE CATWALK to assume the role of geisha. As a moving work of art, she hopes to morph into a more vibrant and joyous self.
Marya, a performance artist with The Museum of Ethnography, her studio / alternative- gallery, (22 South Third Street, Easton Pennsylvania 18042), annually produces multimedia shows (video, performance, mosaics). This year’s presentation (the eighth show at the Museum) entitled EVERYDAY LIFE ON THE CATWALK opens on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 8:00 p.m., with a runway fashion show featuring local artists modeling kimonos created by Marya. The museum exhibition runs through June 30, 2007. Museum hours are Tuesday’s and Friday’s 11a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
Marya holds a BFA from Centenary College, and a MFA from Vermont College. Her feminist-based work is overlaid within anthropological references. Free tours of The Museum of Ethnography are conducted by Professor Clarity (Marya’s performance character). For further information contact her at 908-689-0079 or maraland@verizon.net
