Born in Taiwan, Wei Jane Chir has spent more than twenty years living and making art in Europe and America--exhibiting her work both locally and around the world. In the years following her receiving an MFA from the University of Art in Berlin she had exhibited in Germany, Taiwan and the United States. Her pictures--especially her highly achieved techniques in egg-tempera, oil paintings, and etching--have won her several awards and have drawn the attention of collectors.
In addition to private collections, Wei Jane Chir's works have been housed in the permanent collections of many prestigious art institutions, notably the New York Public Library, Morris Museum in New Jersey, Berlin Henning GMBH in Germany, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art and Taipei Fine Art Museum in Taiwan, to mention a few. Chir's body of work has been favorably reviewed in The New York Times and Art in America.
The theme of time, a key aspect of Chir's past work, continues to be a mesmerizing element in her current exhibition at Connexions Gallery.
In April 2002, Wei Jane Chir had her fifteenth solo show at the Alexdre de Folin Gallery in New York City. Following that summary of her art to date, she took her work in a new direction. Charmed by the architectural and historical legacy of the city of Easton, she purchased an old house with a small garden in the center of the city's downtown. Her life in Easton has been very different from the one she lived in New York City. Surrounded by the clearly defined seasons along Route 611, which winds along the Delaware River, she no longer desired to paint the way she used to. Her focus turned to remodeling her house into a studio, cultivating her passion for gardening, and retooling her life and art.
In the summer of 2007, Chir finally rekindled her interest in drawing, taking inspiration from everyday life and from those with whom she came in contact. She started to draw portraits of her family from memory, of friends, and of intriguing visitors such as her contracting workers, a local banker, and a utility inspector. The collection of her portraits is a daily notebook of her encounters with others in her community.
Out of the studio and into the kitchen, Chir has devoted her time to developing unique blends of herbal teas. She sees this also as an act of creation and a different kind of artistic endeavor. "Tea makes people peaceful and genuine!” The art of appreciating fine teas, and making them, is rooted in the serenity of one’s inner peace. Gardening and brewing tea have profoundly enriched her ways of encountering, tasting, the passage of time.
In this exhibition Wei Jane Chir shares the two artistic projects she started in her new home--Tea and Portraits--both of which are truly “made in Easton.”
